Often yes in good conditions—but the panel is only half the calculation.
A 200W panel can replace the daily energy used by many efficient camping fridges when it receives several effective sun-hours. It may not keep up through shade, cloud, winter sun, freezer use or a larger combined camp load.
Estimate useful daily solar harvest
Panel wattage is a peak rating. CampWatt applies a 75% planning factor for real-world losses:

Compare harvest with the fridge load
An example 45W fridge at 35% duty uses about 378Wh per day. In that scenario, 450–675Wh of useful solar can cover the fridge on paper and leave some energy for losses or small devices. A hotter 60W fridge at 50% duty uses about 720Wh per day, so the same panel has far less headroom.
The battery carries you through overnight use and poor solar periods. A panel that balances the average load on a sunny day does not remove the need for enough stored energy.
What reduces panel output?
- Partial shade across the panel
- Cloud, smoke or heavy haze
- Low winter sun and shorter effective solar windows
- Poor orientation or a panel left flat all day
- High panel temperature
- Cable and controller losses
- A power station with a lower solar-input limit
Check voltage as well as watts
The panel’s open-circuit voltage and working voltage must fit the power station’s permitted solar-input range. Do not assume that a matching wattage means the panel is electrically compatible. Confirm plugs, polarity, voltage and current limits with the manufacturer.
When should you consider more than 200W?
Consider extra solar headroom when you are running a fridge as a freezer, carrying multiple cold-storage appliances, camping through winter, staying under trees, powering laptops or CPAP equipment, or planning long stays without vehicle or mains charging.
Before buying a larger panel, check whether the battery can accept the extra solar input and whether the additional size and weight suit the way you travel.
